The trap is seductive. AI makes test generation fast, so teams generate more. The dashboard shows a higher test count. The suite runs in less time. Everything looks better.
But if the tests are covering the wrong flows, none of that matters. A suite of 1,000 tests that misses the checkout edge case is worse than a suite of 100 tests that catches it every time.
Coverage is not about count. It is about how closely your tests reflect how real users actually behave, and how well they map to the parts of your product where failure is most expensive.
What a strong coverage strategy looks like
A strong test suite consistently has five properties:
AI gives you the speed. You still have to decide where to aim it.
That is the whole thing. AI accelerates test generation, script writing, regression runs, and root cause analysis. It removes the mechanical overhead that slowed QA teams down for years.
But it does not decide what matters. It does not know that your checkout flow breaks when a user has an expired session and a promotional code applied at the same time. It does not know that your biggest enterprise customer uses an edge case nobody on the team has tested.
That judgment still belongs to the team.
The teams that win are not the ones generating the most tests. They are the ones using AI to test the right things faster, at the right point in the process, with enough context to fix failures before they reach users.
